Sunnyside down: Woody, Buzz and the troupe
How sweet it is to see our old friends at play once again! Sheriff Woody (voiced by Hanks), spaceman Buzz Lightyear (Allen), Mr and Mrs Potato Head (Rickles and Harris), cowgirl Jessie (Cusack), Hamm the moneybox pig (Ratzenberger), Rex the dinosaur (Shawn) and friends are still holed up in Andy’s toy box — except that Andy (John Morris) is off to college. And when the gang is kicked to the kerb by Andy’s mum (Laurie Metcalf), it’s a short ride to Sunnyside Day Care. Only Woody, loyal Woody, has day-care misgivings — which only goes to show how smart a drawstring cowboy he is.
The pure joy of Pixar is in the touching and brilliantly surreal detail of the animators’ observations (voiced by Keaton, their natty Ken doll is a camp classic). Not only do the toys bring back childhood memories but each one is a lovable and robust identity in his or her own bouncy right. Except, that is, for Lotso (Beatty), the strawberry-scented bear who rules the Sunnyside toy prison with a paw of iron. He’s another furball altogether…
