Flint Lockwood (voiced by Hader), the hyper inventor who turned water into torrential food in 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, is in hog heaven when his multitalented corporate idol, Chester V (Forte), snaps him up and puts him to work inventing stuff in San FranJose, California. Little does Flint know that Chester isn’t the shining light he seems, and when the big V informs him that Flint’s supposedly dormant food machine is churning out rampant “foodimals”, Flint and his ever-loyal cadre (Caan, Faris, Samberg, Bratt, Harris and Crews) have no hesitation in returning to Shallow Falls to destroy it.
Visually, Meatballs 2 is a psychedelic trip and a must-see if you’re three. Content-wise, Flint and Co’s world-saving mission is one long, hot and bothered note. Then again, what plot wouldn’t pale into insignificance in the face of this deranged rainbow chewiverse, where giant cheeseburgers scuttle on French-fry legs, rockmelons have teeth, watermelons are equipped with elephants’ trunks and a two-legged strawberry wears a bike helmet? There’s even a touch of the Soylent Greens to close the loco show. Great screaming leeks!
