Julie & Julia

DRAMA; 2hr 3min

STARRING: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina

Kitchen wiz: Streep

Entwining two can-do tales from 1949 Paris and 2002 New York City, Julie & Julia is written and directed by Nora Ephron, stars La Superba Streep and showcases the most scrumptious food on the planet. What’s not to love?

J&J the movie is based on the memoirs Julie & Julia by Julie Powell and My Life in France by American chef Julia Child (with Alex Prud’homme). In Made in Hollywood–style, Powell’s book grew from a resolve by the office worker and frustrated writer to cook — and blog — her way in one year through Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. That’s 365 days and 524 recipes in one small domestic kitchen.

Blended with the tribulations of modern girl Julie (Adams; pep incorporated) and her husband, Eric (Messina), is the culinary learning curve of the 6ft 2in, fruitily-voiced Child (Streep), the wife of a diplomat (Tucci) whose yearning to really cook is as compulsive as Julie’s decades later. Although they would never meet, the two women are kindred souls, their shared appetite for cooking a transformative appetite for life.
